The Issue of Homelessness

Homelessness in the modern world is a major issue. As the world remains in a constant state of war and political disagreement over rights and freedoms that vary from one another, we forget those who have little say in their own freedom. In the Western democratic world, freedom is often equated with the ability to contribute to society and own property, a view deeply ingrained in Western governments; homeless individuals lack the resources to do so, so the issue of freedom arises. We equate our government by GDP, but we fail to account for how successful a country is not by being able to build a business, or by who wins in a war, but by how well it takes care of not just its citizens but those who can offer very little in return due to life circumstances.

My Goal

I aim to highlight the issue that every citizen of the world tends to ignore. How government institutions isolate and everyday people perpetuate harmful stereotypes of homelessness and their lack of wanting to get better, which further disconnects us from their humanity. I worry that by removing the humanity of homeless individuals, we will begin to see them as anything other than a drain on society, which can lead to horrific persecution. By documenting homeless individuals, I hope to restore hope and curiosity in those who fear them, and bring humanity back to our society.
